My Chinese edition book is now circulated in the Auckland City libraries New Zealand National Library in Wellington.

The author, a 4th generation Wah Jiao (Overseas Chinese) reflects on how a group of Chinese were forced to leave China because of the Opium war and the aggressive colonisation of the British of China. Most of the people were forced to work in extremely difficult, hot and humid conditions under the threat of head hunters/ the local natives.
These Chinese people were not considered to be citizens of the land. When the land gained independence from the British, they were considered second class citizens. In 1969, there was a racial riot where the local Malays fought with the Chinese. The Chinese were not allowed to return to China.
When the author left for Canada and New Zealand, her eyes were opened. In New Zealand, the Chinese were subjected to the Poll tax, The Chinese Immigrants Act was passed by Parliament, introducing a ‘poll tax’ of £10 (equivalent to $1630 in 2013). and the poll tax was increased to £100 ($18,400).
The author felt indignant with the bad treatment of the Chinese in Malaysia and New Zealand. This motivated her to write her book, to tell the world, and future generations that the Chinese abroad/ Wah Jiao had been oppressed.
“Writing my book helped me matured that I began to appreciate my Chinese rich heritage. I regretted growing up I ignored the Chinese language mainly because of the system in Malaysia. I made up for it by learning as much as I can about the history of my family and of China.”

Volunteers Services Abroad and my daughter Gabrielle

This is from my second daughter, as most of you live overseas, I am posting this for you to be aware of VSA, Volunteers Services Abroad. It is similar to the Peace corp that we were exposed to from USA.
What shall I say about my daughter Gabrielle? Even when she was in primary school, she was very aware of social issues. She volunteered in the Singapore Zoo.The first time she went, they gave her the worst job. Yet she persisted in going.

How should I feel when my daughter gives up a very cushy lawyer's job to become a volunteer in a remote pacific island? I trained her to have social consciousnesses. She had been to and helped me with my charity work. Now I just have to give my blessing and pray nothing bad will happen.

As a mum, am I happy for her to go.  That's her calling, and I am proud of her.

Ann

Tribute to my Mum, Mary Kong Wah Kiew.

Next Sunday will be Mother's day.
Here are nine children my mum produced.
Mum had a difficult time,
Twice she was a grass widow.

Dad went to Singapore and to the UK.
Mum stayed at home to take care of us.
She supplemented Dad's meager income,
She tapped rubber, kept chicken, ducks and even a pig.

She educated both boys and girls,
At a time where Confucian ideas,
deemed that it useless to educate girls.
Bloody useless girls.

Poor mum, just when she was,
about the enjoy the fruits of her hard labour,
It was her fate, to be plucked from us.
We love you and miss you.

(Grass widow, is a woman whose husband had to go away for long business trip or education. In Mum's case, it was years. )

In the past, I could copy an image from Facebook to Blogger. Some how, recently the imaged is disallowed. Fortunately, I have a very clever IT person who helped me retrieved it from Word and convert it to Jpeg.
